A nutritious and balanced diet is, of course, great for our bodies but there are some foods that are more beneficial and more notorious than others. Here are five foods that are proven to enhance the brains overall health as well as ensure that its functioning properly on a daily basis.

1) Berries:

Berries are well known for their role in improving motor skills and as well as the brain’s overall learning capacity. They are often called the best berry for your brain. Most berries including blackberries blueberries, raspberries and others are full of anti-oxidants that are great for boosting the brain. You can help reduce the effects of aging on the brain by eating these berries once a day. Berries are sometimes referred to as super fruits because most of them contain anthocyanins and flavonoid which are great for improving your memory and allowing you to easily recall past events.

2) Nuts and Seeds:

Peanuts, hazelnuts, almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds are good for your brain. Nuts and seeds are full of Omega 3 and Omega 6 Fatty acids as well as Vitamin E and Vitamin B6. All of these nutrients help you to think more clearly. They also help you to think more positively because of Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids work as natural anti-depressants. Some seeds and nuts are full of thiamine and magnesium which are great for the money, cognitive function, and brain nourishment.

3) Green Vegetables

Leafy green vegetables such as cabbage, spinach and others are excellent for the brain. They help greatly when it comes time to remember old information and process it like you just learned it yesterday. This is because these foods are full of vitamin B-6, B-12 and Folic which are great compounds which are needed within the brain to break down homocysteine levels which can lead to forgetfulness and even Alzheimer’s disease. These vegetables are often high in iron content. If there is not enough iron intake, cognitive activities slow down greatly.

4) Fish   

Eating fish overall is greatly beneficial to your health, especially for your brain. Fish is full of Omega-3 which is a fatty acid known to be highly beneficial to the body in various aspects. Eating one serving of fish a week can highly decrease one’s chances of getting Alzheimer’s disease. These fatty acids have a brain function. Omega-3 also provides more oxygen to the brain as well as help retain information whilst remembering old information. The best fish to eat for brain health are Salmon, Tuna and Trout.

5) Chocolate    

The main ingredient of chocolate, cocoa is very notorious for the brain. Scientists have proven that the anti-oxidants content found in just two or three table spoons of cocoa powder is much stronger than anti-oxidants found in other foods such as green tea or red wine. The main anti-oxidant found in cocoa is known as flavanols said to have increase blood flow to the brain. While normal milk chocolate lacks flavanols but they are in majority in dark chocolate.
